Abstract

This research is an attempt to explore the novel Inyik Balang by Andre Septiawan in the perspective of magical realism. The approach used is a qualitative method that focuses on hermeneutics.  The source of data obtained from this study is the novel Inyik Balang by Andre Septiawan. Data collection technique are carried out using reading and recording techniques.  The results of this study can be found data from the representation of magical realism in the novel Inyik balang by Andre Septiawan.  Magical realism data was found based on the analysis of story texts based on Wendy B. Faris' theory. The results of the study show that the narrative of magical realism in the novel Inyik Balang by Andre Septiawan tells the social life of the Sumatran people with various magical phenomena. The magical elements in the novel Inyik Balang are divided into four, namely 1) the irreducible element; 2) the phenomenal world; 3) merging realms; and 4) disruptions of time, space, and identity. An important implication of this research is that literature can contribute to the discussion of the science of magical realism
